Alex Sellers holds a master's degree in saxophone performance from Oakland University, and a bachelor's degree in saxophone performance and master's degree in music technology from Georgia Southern University. He is passionate about music education and has worked extensively with middle school and high school band programs as a clinician, inspiring and nurturing young musicians. He maintains an active private saxophone studio with students ranging from 6th to 12th grade, many of whom participate in the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Ensembles and the MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Contests.
As a performer, Alex is deeply committed to the advancement of saxophone repertoire. He has commissioned and premiered over 30 new works, primarily for saxophone and electronics. Notably, he appeared on composer Christopher Biggs' inaugural CD Decade Zero, performing Promethea for saxophone and fixed media. He has also collaborated with Detroit-based OperaMODO on performances of Jake Heggie's opera Three Decembers, showcasing his versatility and dedication to the broader performing arts spaces.
Beyond his musical endeavors, Alex is a self-proclaimed data nerd with a keen interest in process optimization. He enjoys staying updated on the latest developments in SAAS platforms and the broader tech world, and has recently gotten into 3D printing and design. This unique blend of musical and technical expertise enables him to bring a multifaceted approach to his work as an educator, performer, and administrator.
