INSIGHTS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

BEHIND THE SCENES

Adam Gleason: Going from a community college to a four-year university was overwhelming. I became depressed and lost the motivation to go to class and my grades started to suffer.

Kiara Deane: So one of the disability that I have is called dyslexia, the professors and tell them what type of disability I had, and also, I needed a note taker. So I would wait before class or after class to tell them what type of accommodations I needed.

Shabeg Minhas: So I had two issues I was dealing with, addiction and time management. Dealing with the two is almost impossible, and that's the reason why I struggled with my grades.

SUCCESS STRATEGIES

Shabeg: So the Office of Student Success encouraged me to take less of a class load, and not only that, but they gave me online resources to help with my motivation and my time management. So along with that, my family was really supportive of my recovery.

Adam: The student success team provided me with guidance and showed me on campus resources, including the counseling center and wellness coaching, both of which have helped me get back on track.

Kiara: I went to the Office of Student Success, and they guided me to the DSS office, so I can get the tools I needed to become successful in the classroom.

LIFE LESSONS LEARNED

Kiara: In my time here, at Oakland University, I've learned to be a better communicator and ask for help before it's too late.

Shabeg: Along the way, I learned to set realistic expectations on myself and I also learned not to be scared to ask for help from faculty and staff.

Adam: In my journey, I found that I thrive in structure, routine, and accountability in my support team, whether it's my family or OU faculty and staff.

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR STUDENTS

Shabeg: The student success team gave me a self-help book to help with my motivation and my leadership skills, and most important of all, they held me accountable for how I do here, in my classes and that's key to my success.

Kiara: They always had their door open. They always heard what I have to say, and they always answer my phone calls. To be honest, that is the recipe for student success.

Adam: Student success to me is knowing all the resources at my disposal and everyone on campus working together to help students make it to graduation
