U.S. Senator Gary Peters
Washington D.C and Michigan

Working in a Congressional office can be an incredibly rewarding and exciting experience. An internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience and observe first-hand how our government operates. Interns gain practical work experience by undertaking a variety of administrative and legislative responsibilities in the office.

Interns in the Washington office draft constituent correspondence, attend briefings and Congressional hearings and prepare memoranda for me and members of my staff. Interns in the Michigan office conduct research, assist with constituent casework and draft correspondence. Interns in both offices assist with answering phones, data entry and general office systems operations. Interns are an important AND VALUED part of my staff.

Internships are available expressly for the purpose of furthering educational objectives, therefore they are unpaid and usually awarded to graduate and college-level students.

U.S. Representative Haley Stevens

In the Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

In Washington, DC, interns' responsibilities will vary. They may be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In the District office, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may be assigned to assist in various constituent case work or work on District-based projects of importance.

To apply for an internship in one of our offices, please send a resume, cover letter, and two references to the following locations by Friday, November 17th for the winter/spring term:

Washington, DC Office: [email protected]
Farmington Hills Office: StevensInternshipsDO@mail.house.gov

Applications will be accepted after November 17th on a rolling basis for the winter/spring term.
