Ethics Bowl
What is Ethics Bowl?
Does public health outweigh personal choice? Should social media be moderated? Do businesses have a responsibility to their communities? These are the sorts of issues that future leaders – today’s students – have to tackle. Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) is an academic competition combining a valuable and distinctive educational experience with the excitement and fun of a competitive team game. And a team of students at Oakland University is pretty good at it. It’s not debate. It’s more of a competitive conversation on topics that are complex, controversial, and difficult to solve.
The ethics of how you analyze and form your opinion is what challenges, motivates and invigorates the students who comprise our Ethics Bowl team. The educational objective is to help students develop the critical thinking skills for an honest and ethical deliberation.
Oakland University’s Ethics Bowl teams are comprised of members who discuss and respond to real ethical issues – designing arguments using philosophical principles. These students are quick, bright and dedicated.
Oakland University’s Ethics Bowl team has been on campus since 2003 and has traveled annually to regional tournaments. OU has qualified for the National Championship eight times. Only 36 teams in the country qualify each year. To do so, teams must travel to their regional competition and place in one of the top spots.
