Register Your International Travel
- International Travel Registration is important so that the university can contact you in the event of an emergency and assist you as promptly as possible.
- Registering your travel allows you to be covered by OU's international health insurance policy, provided free of charge to all students, faculty, and staff on OU related travel.
- Do not register your personal (non OU related) travel. However see the section below for important tips for personal travel.
If you have questions regarding registration after reading the instructions below, please contact the International Education Office.
- Complete your program registration and required documents on our application management system, Horizons.
- Register for OU’s free international health insurance on OU’s Risk Management Foreign Travel Registration page (this is one of the required documents on your study abroad application).
- Register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program through the U.S. State Department.
Follow these steps if you are a student traveling abroad independently for university purposes. This includes participation in any study abroad program which is not sponsored by OU; any research you will be conducting abroad; any work, internship, or volunteer experience abroad related to your course of study; participation in an academic conference, artistic or cultural event, or sporting event abroad; participation on an Alternative Spring Break or other service program abroad; and any other activities abroad related to your studies or extracurricular activities at OU.
Do not register for purely personal travel abroad, such as a vacation or travel to visit family.
Register only for travel outside of the United States; do not register for travel within the United States or to U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
- Complete the Independent International Travel Registration on our application management system, Horizons.

Personal travel is any travel which is unrelated to your activities at OU. This travel should not be registered with the university. This includes vacations or visits to family abroad. If you will be combining personal travel with university-related travel, follow the steps above according to whether you are a student or faculty/staff. If you are traveling for purely personal purposes, we encourage you to:
- Purchase an international health insurance policy which will cover you while you are abroad. OU does not endorse any specific policy, but there are many policies to choose from as compiled on the Forbes page.
- Register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program through the U.S. State Department.
- Consult travel.state.gov for important information about your destination.
