Authorizing Body:

OUWB Office of Research

Date Issued:

Sept. 3, 2026

Last Update:

Sept. 3, 2026

Last Review:

Sept. 3, 2026

Rationale:

OUWB is committed to supporting the publication of research conducted by its students.

Scope and Applicability:

Publication fee support is available to enrolled students and to OUWB graduates for up to one year after graduation. Priority will be given to publications resulting from Embark research projects, to primary research as compared to reviews, and to requests by student authors who have not received previous support for publications.  Case reports will not be considered for fee support.

Manuscripts accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals will be considered for support of publication fees, processing fees, and page charges.  Fees for embargo periods and rapid reviews are not eligible.

Standard Practice Guideline:

The OUWB Office of Research will only support publications when the total publication fee is $3,000 or less.  OUWB will not pay for publications if the total publication cost is greater than $3,000 (if the total fee is divided into more than one invoice).

Support is limited to one publication per year for each student when listed as first author.

Support for eligible publications will be allocated by the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies based on recommendations of the Research Committee and pending availability of funds.

Approved funding will be paid directly to the journal by OUWB based on the invoice provided.

Procedures:

To be Considered for Support:

  • Papers must be accepted by peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in PubMed with an impact factor of 1.5 or greater and have a publicly available list of processing/publication fees.
  • The OUWB student requesting support must be listed as first author and must have made significant contributions to study design and conduct and to manuscript development.
  • The paper must have a senior or corresponding author/mentor who is an OU- or OUWB-faculty member and in compliance with existing policies.
  • Embark projects are eligible if the research is approved by an OU- or OUWB-faculty mentor or co-mentor.
  • Non-Embark research is eligible if it is registered in the OUWB Student Extracurricular Research Project Reporting Form.
  • Papers must have resulted from research conducted at OU, OUWB or CH.
  • When requesting support, students must provide:
  • a copy of the submitted manuscript, including the list of authors and affiliations
  • proof of manuscript acceptance
  • an invoice from the publisher with total fees of $3,000 or less

Open Access (OA) journals make publications freely and immediately available online to all readers and often charge substantial article processing fees (APCs).  While OUWB will support OA APCs, the following guidelines have been established:

  • The authors must have initially tried to publish their work in a relevant journal that does not include APCs. Exceptions will be considered if the OA journal is the best subject fit or the most influential journal available.
  • Hybrid (non-required) OA journal publishing fees will not be considered.
  • A student (as first author) can receive funds to support only one OA publication during their enrollment in OUWB.
