Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s 2026 Medical Education Week begins May 11 and aims to highlight OUWB’s contributions to innovative research and advancements in medical education.

“Beyond the White Coat: Creating a Legacy of Compassion,” is the theme of this year’s special week.

The diverse and multifaceted program is set to include presentations of poster abstracts and prominent speakers from the medical education field who are invited to share insight and expertise. (See below for full schedule.)

This year, the week is being held in honor of the late Sandor Shoichet, M.D., who was instrumental in shaping the annual event and served as co-chair of the planning committee with Ann Voorheis-Sargent, Ph.D., director, OUWB Center for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME). He passed away in June 2025.

Tori Arnold, faculty development coordinator, CEME, and one of 11 planning committee members, said Shoichet was a foundational leader of Medical Education Week and a compassionate physician and collaborator.

“This year’s theme … really stems from how Dr. Shoichet operated as a person,” said Arnold. “He was so caring, kind, thoughtful, and compassionate. We wanted to honor that.”

Shoichet served as program director, Internal Medicine Residency, and medical director, Outpatient Clinics, Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital. He also was an associate professor of Internal Medicine at OUWB.

The special week exists in large part because of the late William Davidson, a successful businessman and founder of Palace Sports and Entertainment. In the late 2000s, Davidson donated $1 million to legacy Beaumont Health with the express direction that the money be used to support medical education under the direction of Shoichet, who was Davidson’s doctor and friend.

This allowed for a permanent endowment that is dedicated to faculty development, an area that many institutions recognize as important to an educational endeavor’s ongoing success, though one that often lacks adequate resources.

One of the ways the endowment accomplishes its mission is by sponsoring a nationally esteemed medical educator to be the week’s distinguished speaker in Davidson’s name.

This year’s featured speaker will be Kelley Skeff, M.D., the George DeForest Barnett Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Stanford University, and co-director, Stanford Development Center. His presentation will be “The White Coat in Action: Key Steps in Patient Care.” (Shoichet’s daughter, Catherine Shoichet, also is set to attend the keynote session.)

The keynote — and all the other sessions — are open to anyone with interest. There are no costs to attend. (Register for sessions here.)

Brie Desmond, faculty development coordinator, CEME, also was a member of the planning committee.

“We hope those who attend Medical Education Week events take away greater understanding of all of the wonderful things that are happening at Corewell and OUWB,” she said. “The whole week is about recognizing and uplifting the community we serve.”
