Along with Dean Mezwa (back row, third from right), Captain America, Captain Marvel and Spiderman wished OUWB's newest medical students good luck on their medical school journey.

One week after the "Sundaes on Sunday" orientation kick-off event, the Class of 2026 took in a baseball game at Jimmy John’s Field, giving these newest medical students the opportunity to unwind before their very first day of classes.

The group had a bright outlook despite the heat and the realization that the hard work was about to begin.

"This is a great way to end the weekend and gear up for a new week of classes," said M1 Hoon Oh.

The day’s activity was another first for many students, like Joel Karsten, to get to know their way around metro Detroit. Karsten, who is from Grand Rapids, Mich., had never heard of Jimmy John's Field located in Utica.

For OUWB Stephan Sharf Dean Duane Mezwa, M.D., faculty and staff, it was a chance to meet and mingle with the students, and socialize with coworkers, families and friends, while enjoying summer’s favorite pastime between the East Side Diamond Hoppers and the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers. (The Hoppers won the game, 7-5.)

The fact that it was Superhero Day at the field added to the group’s upbeat mood as these future superheroes of medicine gladly posed for a photo with Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Spiderman.

“It was a really fun week where we felt very welcome,” said M1 Neelesh Peddireddy.
