Your confidentiality and protected health information (PHI) are of the highest priority. As such, you will be unable to schedule appointments through Google calendar. While this may cause inconvenience, there are risks associated with calendar sharing that could result in unwanted sharing of your PHI or the PHI of others. 

Think of your counseling record as protected health information (PHI) that may only be shared with your permission. Even with your permission, the OUWB Mental Health Counselor may share information from your record, but cannot release the record itself. The OUWB Medical School does not have access to your mental health records, and therefore would be unable to share them with residency programs.

Minimal information related to assessment, safety, treatment plan goals/progress, and treatment interventions are included in your record. Only yourself and the counselor have access to your records. The OU Counseling Center and Graham Health Center may also have access to your records, though they will not be viewing your information unless you are working with one of their staff members.

You may request your record at any time, and the counselor may determine whether this request will be accommodated. Additionally, you may give written permission to have your information shared with another source, though your record itself will not be released. There are a few rare exceptions to this rule, such as a subpoena for the records from a court of law.

Per the National Association of Social Workers, “The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet basic and complex needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.” Social work takes into account how both a person’s environment (external factors such as home, school, work, family, friends, community) and their person (internal factors such as genetics, health, social history or life experiences, identity, mental health, beliefs) impact a person’s situation and outlook. Using this lens, social workers can assess and intervene to help clients learn how to cope with stressors or to empower clients to create change.

Counselors work in a variety of places, including: hospitals, clinics, schools, private practices, juvenile justice systems, prisons, homeless and domestic violence shelters, child and adult protective services, foster care agencies, senior centers, nursing homes, and grassroot community organizations. They can hold a variety of jobs, such as mental health/substance abuse therapists, advocates, crisis interventionalists, case managers, community organizers, program evaluators, managers or directors of non-profits, community educators, and faculty in academia.

In the state of Michigan, a social worker or professional counselor who has completed their Master of Social Work/Master of Counseling, passed the national clinical licensing exam, and has at least 3,000 to 4,000 hours of supervised clinical work can receive their LMSW or LPC credentials. An LMSW, or Licensed Master of Social Work or an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) are eligible to provide psychotherapy.

Each year during the annual enrollment period, eligible students enroll, dis-enroll, and add or delete dependents from the plan. It is important that you consider your elections carefully since changes to those elections can generally only be made during a subsequent annual enrollment period. Exceptions will be made if you experience a qualified Life Status Change.

Students who wish to participate in the OUWB insurance plan need to submit an enrollment form. The deadline to submit forms for the 2024-2025 academic year is Friday, August 9, 2024. The payments for Buy Up plans or dependent coverage are due each semester on August 15 and January 15. Payments can be made through the Oakland University Online MarketPlace (link to come soon).

The following list of immunizations are required to begin your medical school career as well as specific requirements for the tests and/or boosters that must be documented. Refer to the current  AAMC Standardized Immunization form for additional information. Please note that you must provide copies of official records from your local health department, patient portal or a physician's records.  All records MUST have patient identification (name and date of birth) for all titers, immunizations and Tuberculosis screening.  

• MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): 2 doses or proof of serological immunity
• Adult tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap):  one dose in the past 10 years (must not “expire” during M1 year)
• Varicella vaccine: 2 doses or proof of serological immunity
• Hepatitis B vaccine (recommend reading the Hep B Frequently Asked Questions): 3 doses AND proof of serologic immunity with a quantitative (numerical value) titer
• Tuberculosis screening (pre-placement TB screening) (please read the TB Frequently Asked Questions):
  • Complete one IGRA blood test (QuantiFERON TB Gold or T-Spot) in the current year, OR
  • Two annual TB Skin Tests (TST) with the most recent TST being completed in the current year.  
    • If you have not received an annual TST last calendar year AND this calendar year, you will need to complete one 2-Step TST (two TSTs performed with the second TST placed at least 1 week after the first TST read date). 
• Positive TST are required to have confirmatory IGRA blood testing completed.  
  • If confirmed by IGRA blood test, a 2 view Chest X-ray (AP and Lateral views) must be completed and the report must be submitted.   
  • If treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI) has been completed, please be prepared to submit documentation of treatment.
  • GHC providers will review and advise of how future screenings will be completed based on records submitted.
• Annual influenza vaccine (flu shot) is required.  For students completing the matriculation process, influenza vaccines will be completed during the upcoming fall semester.  If you did not receive your flu vaccine during the current season, you are not required to receive it as part of the matriculation requirements.  
• Annual COVID-19 vaccine is not required, but is recommended.
• Additional childhood immunization record documenting completion of the following may be needed for future clinical experiences and are recommended to have on file in your GHC patient portal:
  • Primary DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) series
  • Polio series
  • Meningitis ACW-Y series
