Considerations Before Withdrawing

Before you decide to withdraw, consider ways in which your financial aid may be impacted. Significant changes to your financial aid eligibility are possible if you withdraw from one or all of your classes.

Policies, Terms, and Conditions

Review the following policies generally related to financial aid and changing enrollment.

Students are encouraged to take full advantage of financial aid awards by enrolling each semester in full time financial aid eligible credits in their degree program. You are encouraged to work closely with your academic adviser or program coordinator to plan your class schedules and any enrollment adjustments you may want to make. Attending less than full time or withdrawing from classes could result in changes to your aid for the current semester, a future semester, and overall future financial aid eligibility.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Review the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy.

Withdrawing from your courses could result in an impact on your SAP status. Before you make a decision to withdraw from courses, you’re encouraged to meet with your academic adviser and a financial aid adviser to make the most informed decision with all your options in mind.

Scholarship and Grant Renewal

Review the Scholarship and Grant Renewal Policy.

Oakland University scholarships and grants are typically renewable based on GPA, credits attempted and completed, and the duration of which you have received the award. If you lose eligibility because you do not attend, do not complete your credits successfully, meet the GPA requirements, or otherwise do not qualify, you will lose your scholarship and/or grant permanently. If extenuating circumstances exist, you may be eligible for a one-time appeal.

Legacy Provision Eligibility

If you were previously eligible for the legacy provision for loan limits and Graduate PLUS loans, withdrawing from courses may cause you to lose eligibility and be held to the new annual, aggregate, and lifetime loan limits. See the federal aid changes webpage.

Schedule of Reduction for Less Than Full Time Enrollment

Undergraduate students’ minimum expected full time enrollment in an academic year is 24 credits; graduate students’ minimum expected full time enrollment in an academic year is 16 credits. If you are enrolled less than the minimum expected full time enrollment rate, your loans are required to be reduced proportionately to your actual enrollment.
