Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program

The new Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program provides up to $20,000 per recipient, as well as guaranteed job placement at a Corewell Health hospital in Southeast Michigan for two years after graduation. Corewell Health is the new name for Beaumont.

How do I become a Corewell Health Nurse Scholar?
First, apply and be admitted to Oakland University, then complete the secondary application for admission into the School of Nursing. To complete the nursing school application for the School of Nursing (SON), once on the nursing page, select the program you are interested in from left-hand navigation and choose Apply Now. During the application process, you will be given the opportunity to express your interest in the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program.

How does the grant work?
Students receive up to $20,000 in grant funding distributed to the student’s account over the course of the nursing program to use for tuition and other costs of attendance. For Accelerated Second Degree (ASD) students, the grant funds will be disbursed over the four semesters of the ASD program. For Basic-BSN track (pre-licensure) students, the grant funds will be disbursed over six semesters of the Basic-BSN program.

Students receiving the grant must commit to working in a Corewell Health hospital in Southeast Michigan within thirty (30) days of graduation, take and pass the NCLEX examination for licensure within sixty (60) days of graduation, and stay employed for the entire two-year period within the hospital setting.

Scholars who receive the grant but do not complete the nursing program, or do not work as a registered nurse at a Corewell Health hospital in Southeast Michigan for two consecutive years immediately post-graduation, will need to repay the grant, which converts to a no-interest loan upon default.

What are the Corewell Health Hospital locations in Southeast Michigan?
Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital (Royal Oak), Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital, Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital, Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital, Corewell Health Taylor Hospital, Corewell Health Trenton Hospital, and Corewell Health Wayne Hospital.

How does the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program grant impact other financial aid?
Each student financial aid package is unique, so students who are interested in the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program should consult Student Financial Services to learn about all of OU’s financial aid options.

Who qualifies for the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program grant?
The grant is NOT need-based. Decisions are based on students’ secondary application to the SON. All students who are admitted to the SON and commit to working at Corewell Health as a registered nurse for two consecutive years after completion of the nursing program can be considered.

When are the deadlines to apply for the School of Nursing and the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program?
Deadlines for application for the nursing program and the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program are June 1 and Oct. 1. Students will be notified if they have been accepted into the programs approximately one month after applying.

If a student is currently in OU’s nursing school, will they be eligible to apply?
No, this program is for new students. Current students may apply for other scholarship opportunities.

If a student lives in Wayne County, will they be required to work at a Corewell Health hospital in Oakland County?
Corewell Health and Oakland University will partner with students to ensure the best placement post-graduation.

Will students be required to be employed at a Corewell Health hospital for two consecutive years?
Yes, this is the requirement for all students accepted into the Corewell Health Nurse Scholars Program.

Once graduated, will students be required to work full-time at a Corewell Health hospital?
Yes, full-time status of 36 hours per week will be required.  Students must be eligible for employment in the United States at the time the grant is received.

What shift will students be required to work?
It varies depending on the hospital. Shifts may include days, midnights, afternoons and weekends.

Will students receive a sign-on bonus and other incentives if they sign up for this program?
If there are extra incentives (e.g., a sign-on bonus) at Corewell Health for open positions when students graduate, yes, students would remain eligible for those other incentives.

Will current Corewell Health team members be eligible to apply?
Yes, during the application process, please select you are a current Corewell Health team member.
