Doctor of Medicine / Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) Dual Degree

The Doctor of Medicine / Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree is offered jointly by the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) and the OU School of Health Sciences.

Medical students pursuing a career as a physician will benefit from a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree by expanding views and perspectives of how to engage patient populations and further improve their health, thus enhancing the ability to provide impactful patient care as a physician. Specifically, students will prepare to emphasize healthful choices and understand why health issues are prevalent; develop innovative and holistic care models, practices and strategies; and promote public health policy and leadership.

Through this dual degree, OUWB students will apply to the MPH program during their first year at OUWB. Upon acceptance, curriculum overlap enables completion of both a MD and a MPH degree in five years (as opposed to six or more), creating a rich academic and community engaged environment while also saving time and money.

The MD/MPH dual degree consists of evidence- and community-based, experiential, and social justice-oriented curriculum to prepare future clinicians to implement public health practice and research.

This dual degree is a five-year program in which OUWB medical students accepted into the MPH degree will take a leave from the medical program between the M2 and M3 years to complete core courses of the public health degree, including:

  • Foundations of Health Behavior and Health Education (PH 5000)
  • Principles of Community-based Participatory Research (PH 5100)
  • Biostatistical Methods in Public Health (PH 5410) and Laboratory (5411)
  • Introduction to Environmental Health Sciences (PH 5600)
  • Health Policy and Management (PH 5700)
  • Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of Public Health Interventions (PH 5200)
  • Introduction to Epidemiology (PH 5500)
  • Public Health Capstone (PH 5996)

The shift in population health has increased job opportunities for individuals with Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees, while some positions even require both degrees. These highly-skilled, well-rounded individuals are experts in health quality improvement, patient safety, social determinants of health and health disparities.

MD/MPH graduates are prepared to conduct research or hold leadership roles in areas such as the health care system, state/county health departments or health insurance companies. These organizations include the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Priority Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more.
