Augmented Reality Center

Augmented reality offers a means to present information in a highly intuitive and immersive way by superimposing digital images and data on objects in real-time. This merging of the 3-dimensional physical world and digital data can open new and better ways to interact with machines, effectively bridging the digital and the physical worlds. It is a fundamentally new means of engaging with people that helps them absorb and apply information and instructions.

Augmented Reality Center (ARC) was created with the support and expertise of an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) and Oakland University faculty to provide a learning platform where engineering and art intersect. The center includes:

  • A show-case immersive lab where engineering, science and art students engage with and explore Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and their applications.
  • AR/VR space where industry can explore the state-of-art technology with engineering, science and art faculty, and students to test the tools and create content for their business.
  • Workshops for students to learn about AR and its applications to become a valuable resource for the industry.
  • Workshops for industry to learn about AR and its applications in their facilities to prepare for Industry 4.0.
  • Lectures and seminars given by the experts for students and industry to learn about state-of-art in AR and its industrial applications.
  • Collaborative environment where industry, faculty and students can engage, learn and partner on emerging technological advancements.
  • Value-added options for industry partners to use the center as a training facility for their workforce and clients.

Our Partners

Unreal Engine (Epic Games)

Epic Games’ Unreal Engine is the world’s most open and advanced real-time 3D tool. Creators across games, film, television, architecture, automotive and transportation, advertising, live events, and training and simulation choose Unreal to deliver cutting-edge content, interactive experiences, and immersive virtual worlds. Unreal Engine’s code is source-available and is written in C++.  It features a high degree of portability and is a tool used by many developers today in a variety of other genres.  In 2014, Unreal Engine was named the "most successful videogame engine" by Guinness World Records.  It has a complete feature set of graphical rendering, sound processing, and physics that can be widely adapted to fit the specific needs of an application. Epic Games is looking for applications for Unreal Engine beyond gaming.  Currently, the Unreal Engine has been tested in the defense sector and in the agricultural sector.  They are looking at how to bring this powerful platform to the industrial/manufacturing sector.  OU can be the place where the Augmented Reality Center is focused on using it as a platform for industrial AR applications.
