As a counselor, you are on the front lines when it comes to advising students on the benefits of pursuing higher education. Simply put: a college degree leads to better job prospects and higher paying positions. In fact, college graduates earn an average annual salary that is more than $30,000 per year greater than the earnings of high school graduates, a trend that brings in an additional $1 million over the course of a lifetime.

Oakland University makes an exceptional education within reach by:

Maintaining several academic merit scholarships for freshmen and transfers

Expanding payment plan options so students can spread their costs into several smaller payments

Remember, students do not pay a fee when applying to OU — and the process is managed completely online. Applications are accepted year-round, but new students will automatically be considered for academic merit scholarships if they apply by the posted deadlines.

First-Year Students

Learn about first-year student criteria and the steps to apply. You can encourage students to get an edge by maintaining a high GPA (or improving it throughout high school), studying for the SAT or ACT and taking college preparatory courses.

Encourage potential first-year students to visit our campus to see the facilities, learn about academic programs directly from faculty, talk to currents students about campus life, and get a feel for Oakland. From daily tours to Go for the Gold and our academic visit days, we strongly believe that a visit beats any brochure.

Transfers

Find out how transfer students can apply to OU. Students can transfer up to half of the minimum credits required for their intended degree from a community college. OU accepts transfer credit from all regionally accredited institutions and some non-regionally accredited institutions. All students transferring to OU must earn at least 32 credits at Oakland University to complete a bachelor’s program.

Transfer students are encouraged to visit campus to see the facilities, hear about our academic programs from faculty, talk to currents students about campus life, and get a feel for Oakland. From daily tours to events just for transfer students, we strongly believe that a visit beats any brochure.

Dual Enroll

OU partners with school districts throughout the state to offer high school students the opportunity to take college-level classes. This provides high school juniors and seniors who have moved beyond the curriculum available in their school to continue to advance their education. Each year, Undergraduate Admissions hosts programs on campus to give counselors the latest information about OU. They learn about the advantages and benefits of an Oakland University education so they can better advise students.

Promoting the Publics is an annual conference featuring admission presentations from the 15 public universities in Michigan as well as a college/resource fair. High school counselors and career center coordinators are invited.
