June 4, 2018 – The Oakland University Board of Trustees approved the change in name of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Sciences to the Department of Foundational Medical Studies.
The revising of the department name acknowledges and represents an all-encompassing description of the diverse expertise of OUWB’s faculty members.
“The department has grown in scope beyond biomedical sciences to embrace nutrition, ethics and humanities, and shortly, population health informatics, and for these reasons we proposed the name change,” said Robert Folberg, M.D., Founding Dean Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer, William Beaumont Hospital.
OUWB will begin using the new name, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, at the start of the upcoming school year in August 2018.
OUWB transforms medical education by emphasizing holistic physician development. Medical students study in a collaborative learning environment where the curriculum includes courses in humanities and clinical bioethics along with biomedical sciences. OUWB is a union between Oakland University and three hospitals within Beaumont Health, southeast Michigan’s largest integrated health care system.
