Professional Development Opportunities

The Center for Excellence in Medical Education offers a variety of faculty and staff development programs and trainings, both in-person and virtually via Zoom. The CEME team is also proud to collaborate with the Corewell Health CME Department. You can view a list of their on demand CME offerings here. 

Programming Spotlight:
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

ASIST is an intensive, two-day, interactive workshop in suicide first aid that will teach you to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and how to work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Participants must attend both days to complete this training.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to program costs, there is a $70 fee for Oakland University students and employees. For participants not affiliated with OUWB, Oakland University, or Corewell Health East, there is a $120 fee.

2025 Medical Education Month

Previously called Medical Education Week, our 14th annual Medical Education Month will take place in May 2025.

Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Certificate Program

The Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) certificate program is a year-long, cohort-based, nation-wide educational leadership development program administered through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).  An institution-sponsored program (ISP) model of LEAD will be offered at OUWB each calendar year (January – December). Up to 16 Fellows will be accepted into the local LEAD program at OUWB.

The LEAD program fosters practical knowledge drawn from the best recognized theoretical models and best practices of effective leadership that are relevant to medical education organizations and processes.  This program is targeted for early to mid-career faculty who are aspiring to or are already in leadership roles in medical education. Professional staff in leadership roles also can be considered as a Fellow in the LEAD Cohort. Upon successful completion of the LEAD program, graduates will receive an AAMC LEAD Certificate of Recognition.

Residents as Teachers

Provides residents exposure to medical teaching concepts and gives them an opportunity to improve their teaching skills through role-play and other activities. Residents who successfully complete the program will receive an Advanced Training in Medical Education certificate. The program includes the Stanford curriculum taught by Beaumont physicians and an interactive plenary series. This program runs the academic year, August-May.

Clinical Teaching Program

In acknowledgement of the importance of clinical teaching, these seminars are designed for any faculty member who teaches medical students. Following the module of the Stanford Faculty Development Center for Medical Teachers, this program consists of didactic presentations, group discussions, role-play exercises, and personal and institutional goal setting. The faculty who have completed this program have raved about their successful implementation of a “non-prescriptive behavioral approach for improving teaching.” The eight faculty members who attended the one-month program at Stanford School of Medicine and received training are certified to offer this highly regarded and effective teaching program to OUWB faculty.

Implicit Bias Opportunities

Are you seeking Implicit Bias training to meet the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requirements? CEME is offering a variety of opportunities to earn these credits. You can find the most updated list of sessions on our registration page under the "Implicit Bias Opportunities" section. Sessions are restricted to those with a Corewell Health or Oakland email address, so please register with your correct email affiliation.

Fellowship in Medical Education

An advanced-level hybrid program will teach skills in medical education research, including how to formulate a testable research question, designing the study, applying for IRB approval, conducting the study, analyzing data, and disseminating results through posters, publications, and podium presentations.

Participants will be expected to display a poster and present on their project during Medical Education Week. This program consists of ten sessions. You will select five online sessions from our menu of recordings to watch on your own time.

Medical Education Certificate

The Medical Education Certificate introduces the theory and practice of medical education. A range of issues are covered, varying from the practicalities of running classes to the underlying theories that inform and guide what we do in the classroom. The program provides a basic knowledge of medical education, including but not limited to teaching large and small groups, using technology, curriculum theory, pedagogy, mentoring, simulation and threshold concepts. Scholarship and research of medical education will also be introduced.

Peer Connections

Peer Connections is an intentional coaching program for faculty interested in creating reciprocal collaboration with peer faculty from Michigan medical schools. Peers are matched based on research and teaching interests. Each year, we provide the opportunity for faculty to continue their current coaching groups or match with additional faculty members. In addition to matching faculty together from different medical schools, we also offer collaborative faculty development opportunities.

Dimensions of Well-Being

The National Wellness Institute (NWI), recognizes six dimensions:

  • Emotional: This dimension is focused on the awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings and emotional response.
  • Intellectual: This dimension is concerned with continuous intellectual stimulation and growth.
  • Occupational: This dimension is focused on the fulfillment and satisfaction one receives through their work.
  • Physical: This dimension is concerned with one’s physical health and the need for regular and sustained physical activity.
  • Social: This dimension is focused on one’s connection to others through their environment and community.
  • Spiritual: This dimension is concerned with one’s connection with their beliefs and values that provide a sense of meaning and purpose to one’s life.

Well-being Opportunities

Oakland University Recreation and Well-Being offers a variety or workshops focused on the six dimensions of well-being. These workshops are open to any OUWB faculty or staff members who would like to participate.

Bwell, Beaumont Health’s employee wellness program provides a variety of offerings and resources exclusively available to Beaumont employees. These offerings include mindfulness programs, healthy lifestyle coaching, employee energizer sessions, and currently, an activity tracker subsidy program.
