Phlebotomy lab offers students hands-on session instruction

Phlebotomy labFirst-year medical students draw blood and fill tubes for diagnostic blood testing during their venipuncture/phlebotomy lab. Using mannequin arms to practice then their classmates’ arms, they carefully applied what they learned in the classroom.

According to Maurice Kavanagh MEd., director of Clinical Skills Training and Simulation Center, this lab is one more example of how OUWB provides hands-on instruction and experience early in the curriculum for medical students.

“It shows them what being a physician is all about. It’s real actual interaction with people,” says Kavanagh.  “It allows them to be immersed in their work and they get to envision what it is like to be a physician.”
