Research Resources at OUWB

Getting Started with Research

At OUWB, we realize that research is an important tool not only in advancing the practice of medicine and improving the health of our communities but it also provides many of the skills necessary to supplement lifelong learning. We have several resources and programs available to help you achieve your goals. For questions and/or assistance, please contact the Office of Research at [email protected].

Services

Research consultation request

Consultations are available for students who need assistance with the following:  study design, IRB applications, creating data collection tools (quantitative and qualitative), data analysis, etc.  Please use the following link to set up an appointment:

  • Please submit an appointment request using this form: OUWB Statistical Consultation Request Form.
  • We do recommend that you meet with the statisticians prior to developing your study to ensure that your data will adequately answer your research question(s).
  • Post data collection - Please use these guidelines to prepare your data for analysis. Review these guidelines and apply the advice when cleaning up your data before meeting with a statistician. This will assist you in having a more productive meeting the first time, and hopefully, it will prevent back-and-forth delays due to data not being ready for analysis.
  • Please be aware that statistical consultation is needed by students across all years (M1-M4) who are at various points in their research projects. There may be a backlog of consultation requests depending on the time of year. Every effort is made to accommodate all requests. Please submit all consulting requests at least eight weeks prior to your deadline.
  • Please note that Embark projects take precedence over extra-curricular research projects.  In order for OUWB to analyze extracurricular projects, students must be actively involved in the research at the level of co-investigator and should meet authorship guidelines.  Also, students should be the point of contact for the project when working with the OUWB statisticians.

Statistical Analysis Software

Students are eligible to download the Oakland University site license of SPSS.

  • Go to MySail on Oakland's website and log in.
  • In the right column is a link to the OU Appstore.
  • Install the Apporto agent that allows download of the software.
  • Access to two versions of SPSS is available.

Poster review/printing request

Poster printing services are available for student research conducted while registered as an OUWB student. Posters must be submitted to medhelp.oakland.edu a minimum of seven days in advance.

All poster requests must include: date needed, dimensions, orientation (portrait or landscape) and the name of the conference or event where the poster will be presented.

Please submit your poster in Powerpoint format. Posters that contain a large amount of high quality graphics may be too large for the system. If that is the case, submit a medhelp ticket without the attachment and contact the Office of Research for further instruction.

Travel funding request

Students may request funding to support domestic travel to conferences (first authors only) for up to $1,000 per academic year.  Please use the Medical Student Travel Authorization form here and provide all requested documentation at least two weeks prior to travel in order to receive pre-approval.

Travel funding requests for Embark projects being presented should be sent to Julie Jagmin ([email protected]).

Travel funding requests for extra-curricular projects (non-Embark) should be sent to the Office of Research, [email protected].

OUWB Student Publication Funding

Please refer to this link for more information on student publication funding.

Data Storage

Once your IRB application is approved, all data must be stored in a Sharepoint folder. To set up this up, you’ll need to contact Derrick Dugeon ([email protected]) once you have obtained IRB approval.

RJLSS Surgical Symposium

The Robert J. Lucas Surgical Society holds a regional research symposium each year that showcases various surgically-related research projects.  The symposium consists of both pre-recorded poster presentations and live oral presentations, with live Q&A sessions at the conclusion of each presentation.

Research Bites

The Research Bites Conference Series at OUWB is a recurring event held as an opportunity for our students to present their research and share opportunities and ideas with their fellow classmates. At each event there are three student presenters that will showcase their work in a condensed presentation followed by a quick question and answer session with the audience. It is the perfect opportunity for students to share their work, practice their presentation skills and for others students to connect over their shared interest in research.

Institutional Review Boards (Beaumont & Oakland University)

Any research involving human subjects requires IRB approval -- typically through the OU or Beaumont Institutional Review Boards. No data can be collected until IRB approval is obtained.  Also, data containing personal identifiers can not be stored on personal devices. For Embark IRB information, please visit the Embark IRB Resources page. For IRB information regarding extracurricular research projects, please contact Dr. Jean Szura ([email protected]).

Human research projects at Beaumont (both Embark and extra-curricular) are required to be submitted through iMedRIS (hic.beaumont.edu) for review. Below are links to instructions as well as a sample application, instructions on how to respond to modifications, as well as tips for troubleshooting/FAQs.

In addition, the following is a link to a video that goes over the submission process.
