Research Resources at OUWB

Getting Started with Research

At OUWB, we realize that research is an important tool not only in advancing the practice of medicine and improving the health of our communities but it also provides many of the skills necessary to supplement lifelong learning. We have several resources and programs available to help you achieve your goals. For questions and/or assistance, please contact the Office of Research at [email protected].

Identifying research opportunities

Students can find current research opportunities on the MedSync portal (https://oakland.campuslabs.com/engage/) or you may contact the Director of Research Training, Dr. Wunderlich-Barillas, at [email protected], for additional information.

Data Storage

Data should only be stored at the location approved by the respective IRB of record. OU data should not contain identifiers and is often stored on the Google Drive. Corewell data can ONLY be stored on Sharepoint. Sharepoint folders can be requested by contacting Donna McIntyre at [email protected] only after IRB approval has been obtained. Under no circumstance should data containing identifiers (name, MRN, address, etc.) be stored on ANY personal devices.

Services/Resources
Institutional Review Boards

Any research involving human subjects requires approval from the Institutional Review board (IRB). (This includes research that involves collecting demographic information, medical record data, survey data, etc.)  Questions about which IRB to use?  Please contact Dr. Wunderlich-Barillas at [email protected].

Oakland University (OU) IRB - Cayuse

Projects that involve education, community members, or patients from private-practice clinics require review by the Oakland University IRB.  OU uses an electronic system called Cayuse for all regulatory oversight.  You can log into Cayuse using your OU email address.  Additional information can be found at:  https://oakland.edu/research/faculty-staff-resources/developing-proposals-and-research-ideas/cayuse-research-suite/

Corewell Health IRB - iMedRIS

Any research studies that involve patients and/or patient data from Corewell Health require review by the Corewell IRB.  Corewell uses an electronic system called iMedRIS for regulatory oversight.  In order to log on to iMedRIS, you’ll first need to obtain your Corewell Health identification information and you’ll need to register here:  2024 iMedRIS Registration

Research consultation request

Consultations are available for students who need assistance with the following:  study design, IRB applications, creating data collection tools (quantitative and qualitative), data analysis, etc.  Please use the following link to set up an appointment:

  • Please submit an appointment request using this form: OUWB Statistical Consultation Request Form.
  • We do recommend that you meet with the statisticians prior to developing your study to ensure that your data will adequately answer your research question(s).
  • Post data collection - Please use these guidelines to prepare your data for analysis. Review these guidelines and apply the advice when cleaning up your data before meeting with a statistician. This will assist you in having a more productive meeting the first time, and hopefully, it will prevent back-and-forth delays due to data not being ready for analysis.
  • Please be aware that statistical consultation is needed by students across all years (M1-M4) who are at various points in their research projects. There may be a backlog of consultation requests depending on the time of year. Every effort is made to accommodate all requests. Please submit all consulting requests at least eight weeks prior to your deadline.
  • Please note that Embark projects take precedence over extra-curricular research projects.  In order for OUWB to analyze extracurricular projects, students must be actively involved in the research at the level of co-investigator and should meet authorship guidelines.  Also, students should be the point of contact for the project when working with the OUWB statisticians.
Poster review/printing request

Poster printing services are available for student research conducted while registered as an OUWB student. Posters must be submitted to medhelp.oakland.edu a minimum of seven days in advance.

All poster requests must include: date needed, dimensions, orientation (portrait or landscape) and the name of the conference or event where the poster will be presented.

Please submit your poster in Powerpoint format. Posters that contain a large amount of high quality graphics may be too large for the system. If that is the case, submit a medhelp ticket without the attachment and contact the Office of Research for further instruction.

Travel funding request

Students may request funding to support domestic travel to conferences (first authors only) for up to $1,000 per academic year.  Please use the Medical Student Travel Authorization form here and provide all requested documentation at least two weeks prior to travel in order to receive pre-approval.

Travel funding requests for Embark projects being presented should be sent to [email protected].

Travel funding requests for extra-curricular projects (non-Embark) should be sent to the Office of Research, [email protected].

OUWB Student Publication Funding

Please refer to this link for more information on student publication funding.

Request to distribute electronic surveys via Google lists

Students who have IRB approval to distribute surveys for either Embark or extracurricular projects should submit their requests here: OUWB Listserv request

Student Events and Activities
OUWB Beaumont Summer Internship Program

Beaumont Health and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine have a very active summer internship program for medical students following the completion of their first year of medical school. The internship opportunities are meant to foster both personal and professional development. We hope you will find an internship offering that is of interest to you.

Students will be able to apply for internships focusing on clinical/ patient care, clinical research, basic research, medical education, and community-based research.  Internships are four weeks in duration and a stipend will be paid to each student completing the program. Calls for the program are sent out via email each January.

Selection criteria will include:

  • Quality of student’s expression of internship goals and objectives.
  • Quality of student’s CV/resume, especially educational/academic background and professional activities.

Additional requirements:

In addition, students MUST be in good academic standing both at the time of application and again at the end of the semester before internships begin (verification of this requirement will be obtained from the Director of Records & Registration).

Students must successfully pass all courses (a grade of incomplete is not acceptable) to be eligible for the summer internship.
